Some updates

June 6th, 2008 Joe

Work is continuing on the next update to iubo. Things are going smoothly with it and it should be released in the near future! We have a rough internal release date, but I’m not making any official public dates yet just in case. Its starting to look pretty cool already.

On the Business side of things, we’re still getting everything up and running, dealing with banks etc. We’ve entered iubo into a couple of business / entrepreneur competitions, i’ll let you know if anything ever comes of them.

Finally, we’ve set up a twitter account for iubo, go on follow @iuboteam  you know you want to! You can tweet us any questions or report bugs to us that way as well. If your question requires more than 140 characters you can always get in touch through the usual email: feedback@iubo.co.uk

iubo - The future

February 29th, 2008 Joe

I want to take some time to let you all know what we’re currently working on, and where iubo is heading. We’re taking a big leap forward with our next release; you’ll still be able to use iubo the same way you can today, but we’re adding a major new slant to the site. Sharing and community, all based around the wonders of search and getting organised.

New Home

  • Share with your friends
You will able to mark your items as either; private, friends or public. These are all pretty self explanatory. You will be able to follow your friends and keep track of their items that they want you to see. Discover what they’re into at that exact moment or even search their public/friends only items. For example you could do a friends search for the dvd of the transformers, and you’ll see a list of all your friends that currently have it that you could borrow it from!  There is also a few other cool things that we’ve got planned for this sharing feature that we’re keeping secret. Theres gotta be some surprises you know.

Each user will also have their own public page, this is where all their public items are viewable/searchable from. These will be accessible from http://yourusername.iubo.co.uk, its basically one page with your entire digital life on it (depending on your privacy settings of course!), or your own personal search engine about you!

  • Create channels for content you love
You will be able to create new ‘channels’ of information / interest on a certain topic. Are you always looking up recipies for cooking? why not make a new cooking channel (search engine) that will allow the world to enjoy the recipies too! A collection of funny youtube videos? Easy. You can even use this feature to create search engines for your own website or blog, just import your data or feeds and your done, its that easy. Create a channel with all of your favorite podcasts in it, or just a place for all the latest news headlines from different sources you read. Its up to you, the sky is the limit!
  • Content is king
We will also be adding over 10+ new services that you can import data from or subscribe to. Some of these will include: youtube, delicious, vimeo, twitter, plus many more. We’ll be adding more and more services in the future as fast as we can, suggestions are welcome!

Here is some screenshots of what to expect:

New HomepageMain Page

These are the main things that you can expect in the coming months from iubo.

Release #2 - Time to be lazy

February 10th, 2008 Joe

A lot of people have been asking for the ability to import data since day one. We have be planning to do this from the start, it just took a little while to get everything up and running enough to be able to do it.  Well today is the day, we’re excited to announce that you can now import data directly into iubo from a number of sources.

When you import data, it subscribes you to that source as well, therefore iubo will automagically update your index whenever there is something new. The following can be imported:

- vCard files
( Import your contacts from gmail / most other address books in only a few steps!)

- Flickr
( Always have your latest flickr photos available when you need them)

- Digg
( Everything you’ve ever dugg, and will digg gets added to your index!)

- RSS Feeds
(Subscribe to the latest blogs, podcasts, news…anything with an RSS feed.)

If you subscribe to a podcast, you can even watch / listen to them right within iubo!

We’ll be adding more sources to pull data from in the near future. ( Delicious, Youtube, Vimeo are all in the works) If you have any other suggestions of places you want to subscribe to, let us know in the comments.

In this release, as well as importing data we also updated our design. I hope you all like it, we feel its a lot fresher looking and will allows us more flexibility for future features. There are now default saved searches as well, these will hopefully make it easier for new users to find their stuff quicker. Search has also been greatly improved, you can order your searches, search by specific type etc.

I’ve also completed a lot of back-end work on release #2, a lot of optimization, a whole new way of storing our data in the index and a few other things that will help with future development. We also moved to a better host (Media Temple), this will allow us to scale up as required in the future.

There were a few things we wanted to get into this release, but didn’t manage to; you’ll see most of these in release #3.
We’ve got massive plans for release #3, there is a lot to come, I wish I could tell you but you’ll just have to stick around and see.

Any bugs you find / suggestions you have let us know!

Cheers
Joe

Its code monkey time

January 14th, 2008 Joe

Hey all,

The first release of iubo has been out a few weeks now, user up take seems to be decent for our current state. We’re loving hearing back from everyone, all the suggestions and support has been great! Keep it coming. Good to see people spreading the word about iubo, we really appreciate it.

Now that my exams are finished (last one was this morning!) I can get properly stuck into the next release. A lot of it has already been done since the start of the new year. So we’re on track to have it ready to roll out live in the next few weeks, so stay tuned. Quite a few cool features in this one, most of you know that importing is coming, but we’ve got a few other things we’re keeping a surprise :)

Now that I am working on release #2 we’re starting to plan for what features will be in release #3, so keep your ideas coming in and we’ll see what we can do to get them into release #3.

Keep spreading the word!

Joe

Hey there

September 16th, 2007 Joe

Welcome to the iubo blog!

Let me introduce myself; I’m Joe Finnigan, the lead (and only!) developer here at iubo. At iubo its only me and my partner Lynne McCormick, yup thats right its just the 2 of us who are running things around here. Lynne is the site administrator and support master ( If you’ve got any problems with anything to do with the site, send her off a wee email and let her know!), while I take care of keeping the site up, developing new features and squishing bugs when needed.

The purpose of this blog is to keep you all up-to-date with what is happening in the world of iubo (feature releases, updates etc). We also want to provide a platform for you to voice your ideas and suggestions! Anything you want to see, drop us an email at feedback@iubo.co.uk or simply leave a comment on one of our blog posts. We believe that iubo should become whatever our users need it to become, so we want to hear anything and everything you’ve got!

So at the moment I’m working to get iubo in a state where we can start letting users in to try it out. We’re getting pretty close, just got a few more things to get done and ticked off the list before we let you loose on it. Right now the best thing you can do is put your email address on the invite list, and we’ll let you know when you can get in and start playing about with iubo.

We’re gonna try get a video demo put up in the next few weeks probably, so you can all see a sneak peak into what iubo is actually like to use, and give you a better idea about what it actually is. It’s really hard to explain it all in words, because you can use it for such an unlimited amount of uses, we’ll try to give a wide range of examples in the video.

We’ll keep you updated!
Cheers
Joe
